Biography

(Upcoming Exhibition: 33rd Foto Salon - Mimara Museum, Zagreb, Croatia - Summer 2010)

Jesse Ross is an art photographer based currently in Tacoma, Washington U.S.A. He was born December 23, 1972 in Crescent City, California.

Ross is self taught influenced predominently by the priveledge of the view he has been specially afforded growing up as an itinerant. By age 12 he had crisscrossed the U. S. with his long-haul truck driver father in supplement of a formal eduction. The family had also relocated 6 times throughout the West Coast by this time, acting as early "residencies" in which the boy's advanced task was to amalgamate and process nearly surrealist states of existence.

While he had been conducting his own photographic experiments since age 14 with the gift of a professional camera, it was while he was living in Prague, Czech Republic from 1996-97 that he met students attending the influential FAMU 3F Film program, where he first became truly aware of the potential of artist photographer.

After a month living beneath the stars on the Island Zlarin off the Mid-Adriatic Croatian coast, Ross returned to the U.S. with conviction to study photography as his medium. He spent from 1998-2001 studying photographic technical manuals, most influentially Ansel Adams' Zone System, in tandem with theories of photographic and artistic thought. In 2001 Ross returned to Europe to immerse himself in art, historic and cultural influences missed in his Northwest home of Tacoma.

From 2001-2007 Ross lived from Barcelona to Sarajevo, Berlin, Budapest and the Adriatic Sea coast striving to break through to a personal stylistic plateau. In 2005 after a near total loss of the complete collection of the artist's works, he began making expressionistic color photography work founded in photographic Pictorialism and early Modern painting.

Ross's work is in many private collections including that of Bosnia's National and University Library in conjunction with the Bosnian National Gallery. He has recently been the subject of interviews and his works have appeared in arts journals including The Bellingham Review and City Arts Magazine. He is currently involved in exhibition and promotion of his photography work.
